Black or White?

A while ago, I showcased our kitchen {post found here} and as part of that post, I included pictures of our kitchen hutch.

Now, since our cabinets are real cedar, we are not planning to paint them {which would be a sin according to my husband}.  Our kitchen hutch, on the other hand, is definitely not real wood so I can paint it to my heart's content.  The question is...what color?

I initially thought that black would be a good color.  The accent furniture in the adjacent living and dining room is black, so it would tie it together.

But white is so fresh!  I think it would open up the room.

But black is a great pop!

But white would fulfill my need for white cabinets!

Of course, there is always gray...

Or light blue...

Or of course white!  :)

What do you think?  Black...white...or other?

  1. usually i'm all about white, but I DEF think it should be black... it'd add more layer/dimension to the room since the colors are all monochromatic, with the cedar and the floor and the stools, etc...

either way, can't wait to see how it turns out!

  2. I don't think I ever saw the kitchen transformation. Unreal. So beautiful. My vote is off white or a pale pale color . . gray or blue. Such a pretty piece. Lucky girl!

  3. I like the matchy- matchy look, but if you have heart set on painting it I'd so with white.

  4. i think gray would be perfect!! not as bold as black...but will give your kitchen a pop of color against the white walls.

  5. I'm gonna go with black. I like the "pop"

  6. I would normally say black for an accent piece, but after looking at the room as a whole...I think painting it black would make that side of the room seem too heavy. I'm with Courtney...I think a pale color, gray perhaps would be pretty. Then accent with black and white accessories. The kitchen is beautiful.

  7. I love the white rustic look! Cant wait to see what you end up choosing!

  8. Ohhh I'm loving the gray you showed in the pic above! I think it would add color to the room without being so dark as the black. The white might blend into the walls? It's a hard choice! The picture you showed with the white cabinets and hutch and gray walls is gorgeous!!!! I love that look.

  9. I think no matter what you should paint the shelves and back of it a fun color. Have fun with it!

  10. I would say white too... and I like Courtney's reco. I like the pale color look and think it would go great with your colors. :) happy monday

  11. You know I'm a big fan of white in the kitchen! I think it would look fresh and clean. My only concern is if it will pop against the wall. What color is the wall behind the cabinet? A solution might be to paint it white but line the back of the shelves with pretty paper to make it pop. Or maybe paint the hutch a pretty accent color....geesh, I'm no help!

  13. Such a tough decision! I am leaning towards black, but I also love the white!

  14. I was going to say black, but then you threw that light blue into the mix! So tough!

  15. Normally I am a white girl all the way but I think black or gray would look great in your kitchen. Beautiful Hutch you own and great inspiration pictures no wonder you can't decide!

  16. ha! I'm having the same issue with our hutch- i always thought about painting it white with ombre blue shaded drawers..but then I saw this AMAZING kelly green hutch with white painted only on the inside....oh i DIE! it's so hard to pick! BUT, I would opt for white or another lighter color- something other than black, in my opinion :) Can't wait to see what you pick!

  17. I love both! The white would open up the room, but I love how dramatic and chic the black could look. Honestly, I don't think you can't go wrong either way.

  18. I would paint it white and then so not to have it blend in with the wall paint the inside of the glass cabinets black; maybe even the wine rack (if possible). This would continue black as an accent. Or else go with grey. Black will weigh down the space as you have the wooden floor and brown window treatment.

  19. i think dark brown or another color from your granite would look nice with the rest of your kitchen! xoxo jillian:: enter to win a knit cowl!

  20. Haha, this post made me laugh out loud because I am SO indecisive and your photo caption sequence is exactly what happens in my mind constantly. I normally love white, but the black/darker color looks fab! I love the choices.

  22. i think white natasha! beautiful hutch by the way and beautiful kitchen! i want your kitchen :-) i think black will make your kitchen look too dark that is why i suggest white!

  23. Ohhh hard choice. I'm not an expert, but since everything else is cedar, i'm thinking white or gray to balance it out.

  24. Hmmm, I don't know that black or white would fit as well as the color it is, I like that it looks like a built-in actually. But when I find saw it in the room I initially thought, "That would be so pretty in a darker brown" like the shades, to add just a hint of contrast without being as overpowering as the black would be in that space.

I'm sure whatever you chose, it will look great :)

  25. I would say Black, if you keep the wall light. Otherwise, white is lovely too. can't wait to see the finished product!

Stop by and say Hi sometime soon...

  26. Very tough decision! I would say white..or light blue. Because it seems as though everything I've painted black so far in our house..I now wish were white. Just a thought. haha

  27. Your kitchen is beautiful!! Such a hard decision, but I say black. I think it would pop against the lighter walls, and blend with your pretty counters. You could always sand the edges some to give it a rustic look (like the pic with the black hutch and pretty wreath).

  28. Oh you busy girl, you! I definitely think some painting is in order...but what to choose?!? It's such a hard decision! I'm with you, the black is a great pop, white is so classic and clean...but then a great color is always so amazing!!! Glad it's not my decision! Ha! I'm no help at all (c:

  29. I think black would look best with everything else in your kitchen. Can't wait to see what you decide.

  30. My vote is black! I think it would add a lot to your kitchen, especially since your walls are a neutral color and the cabinets are all cedar.

  31. I definitely think black!!! I always use it as a neutral. I understand the need for white cabinets, but I think that it would complement your kitchen more.

  32. I love the hutch! Such a great piece!
I think I'm with Jillian on this. A shade of brown from the countertop would be amazing!
Or if it was me I'd probably go something with more color; like a deep red or burnt orange/bronze!

  33. Normally I LOVE white kitchens, but a white hutch just doesn't seem to co-ordinate with all the wood. Black seems a bit garish....how about using another color, like a dark red-ish?

  34. I love the black! It really does pop! And I am so jealous of your wonderful kitchen! Hubby and I are on the lookout for a hutch too!

  35. I say gray! Maybe even a darker gray...like a slate color. Beautiful piece!

  36. BLACK!! 100%. I think the black goes better with the warm woodtone whereas the white is a little too stark. I personally love white in my decor, but in this case my vote is black for sure! I think it would be very striking!

  37. When you do decide... you have to tell us what the winner of this poll is haha. Looks like its neck and neck.
What about a green color? Your blog is green themed.. and looking back the green flowers.. which is probably why I'm throwing that in there.
I think whatever you choose will look great!

  38. That is definitely a tough decision...but I love white... you just can't go wrong :) Gray would be a really nice option, too! Good luck! xoxoxo brynn

  39. Hi Natasha..I would say a light colour like winter white..as it is in a dark corner of the kitchen and black would make that corner very dark looking.

  40. Usually a fan of white, I am going a different way this time.... I think you're right that the black would pop! It seems to go better in your space but I'm sure no matter what you choose, it will work nicely.

  41. White or a color! I think Lauren's right...black could be too heavy. Anything you do will look great, though. You could change up those knobs, too!!

    ReplyDelete
  42. I say go for the black! It will look sophisticated and dramatic! Your dishes and decor will just pop too!

  43. New follower! I love your blog! I love your kitchen!!! I like the white!

  44. tough choice! I love how clean white looks in a kitchen so I vote white! But whatever you decide will look great. Good luck!

  45. Maybe pale blue or white. Black would be too heavy, especially compared with the natural cedar.

Whatever you choose, I can't wait to see it!!

  46. Hmmm, tough decision! I think either black or white would look good, but in the end I would probably choose white.

  47. I think white would look great in there. You could paint the insides of it a fun color! Can't wait to see what you choose.
