Maternity Diet

I'm changing things up a bit this week.  Instead of my usual recipe, I thought I would share some of the things I'm enjoying right now.  While I realize, most of you are not currently preggo, I still think this applies to the masses.  It's certainly gotten me thinking about what I eat on a regular basis, not just now but from now on.

Of course the above is just a snapshot...this is no way represents everything I eat.  And I should make it clear, that I am definitely not an expert on what do eat while pregnant.  This is just my take on what I'm doing.  Here it goes!

1. Cereal- I  have always loved cereal and pregnancy has not been an exception.  I'm especially fond of Cheerios with banana, Kashi Heart to Heart, Quaker Oats Oatmeal Squares, and Life.  I also have a box of Apple Jacks on the shelf...hey, sometimes it's good to awaken the kid inside!

2. Organic Milk- One of the few things I've adhered too in pregnancy is eating organic dairy and meat, when I can.  For milk, I like the Horizon Organic brand.  I feel better knowing I'm not exposing baby to unnecessary and potentially harmful hormones and chemicals.  And I'm sure my body appreciates it too!

3. Sparkling Water- Since I'm not drinking the bubbly stuff {or any other alcoholic beverages for that matter!}, it's nice to still feel "fancy" with my sparkling water.  Sometimes, I serve it in a wine glass with a wedge of lime and still feel like I'm getting something special to drink.

4. Granola- I've been eating a lot of yogurt lately {see #13} and it's nice to have a little crunch with it. I just discovered Kind bars, so when I saw the granola, I tossed it in my grocery cart.  It's really yummy...this is the blueberry vanilla kind.  And the best part is that it's gluten-free and all-natural.

5. Peanut Butter- You'll notice I'm not showcasing any meat today...truthfully, I'm not a huge meat eater.  But to get my fill of protein, I love peanut butter...the crunchy kind!  MaraNatha is a great natural and organic product.  I eat PB with banana, apple, and of course my PB&J sandwiches!

6. Nutrition Shake- In late 2010, I came down with viral meningitis.  I couldn't keep anything down and was worried about getting enough nutrition.  I started drinking Ensure Nutrition Shakes in the morning and have been doing so ever since.  Turns out, they were a life saver during my morning sickness phase as well!  There are 24 essential vitamins and minerals in every bottle so I know I'm getting what I need for both me and baby.

7. San Pellegrino Limonata- I've mentioned this before, but I love that I can also get my favorite sparkling water in a flavored version.  I love the lemon flavor, but I am sure the orange is just as good.

8. Dessert- I've also mentioned these super yummy Cioa Bella Gelato squares before...I love the key lime flavor!  I love that their all natural with no artificial hormones...yes please!

9. Mac & Cheese- As many of you know...cheese and bread was about the only thing that sounded good during the first trimester.  And while, it's easy to find shortcuts here, I at least try to go for a healthier, organic option.  Annie's is a great brand- it's all natural and organic...something I sure baby Schue will enjoy even after he's born!  :)

10. Bananas-I am loving bananas in my cereal, with peanut butter and honey, or just on their own!

11. Apples & Cuties- While I'm finding my way back to veggies, I've luckily kept my love affair with fruits in tact.  Lately, I'm loving cuties {thanks to my bestie down in SD!}.  They're an easy snack to grab on the go!

12. Dark Chocolate- I've always loved dark chocolate, which is a good thing due to it's many health benefits.  I love mine with almonds...it adds a nice crunch!  And even though, I should only be adding 300 calories too my diet a day, doesn't mean I can indulge every now and then!  ;)

13. Yogurt- I've been eating both organic yougurts and Greek yogurt.  I recently discovered Chobani and have been testing all the great flavors!  The apple cinnamon is one of my favorites...along with strawberry and blueberry.  Again, it's all-natural {though not organic} and has double the protein compared to regular yogurt...plus it's super rich and creamy.

14. Prenatal Vitamins- Of course I would be a totally negligent mother-to-be if I didn't take my daily prenatal.  I started taking these about a month prior to "trying" and have been taking them ever since.  I take over-the-counter prenatals...which was actually recommended by my doc.  Apparently there's no significant difference between the them, except of course for the price!

So there you have it!  Of course, I drink as much water as I can too!  :)  Do you have any foods you recommend during pregnancy...or just in general?  I love discovering new brands and getting recommendations!

HILARIOUS!!! this is VERY similar to my eating routine as of late too my dear...just make sure you're getting enough calories or you'll get in trouble from your dr like i did yesterday saying i need to gain more weight-ugh. i'm sick of eating at this point and there's no room for anything else in there!!!

p.s. we go through a box of cuties a week at my house too--can't get enough!!

  10. I had no idea Kind made granola.
If they make the apricot/macadamia flavor I think I may just roll over and die right there in the grocery store.

  11. Funny you excluded meat because this looks generally like my normal diet!

I love Fage greek yogurt, I usually just have it with some honey, granola, and blueberries. Though now to get my extra 300 cals and more protein since I dont have meat, I've been making smoothies a few times a week with it.

We also buy all organic diary products (aside from ice cream) and I love that you drink Ensure. I drink a Carnation Instant Breakfast (the mix with organic milk) every single morning. I used to drink them when I was little and again in High School, but I can't imagine having anything else for breakfast.

  15. I was all about Cheerios too, but the Honey Nut ones!
And I drank a glass of whey protein shake every other day or so (I'm a vegetarian).
You are definitely keeping it healthy!

  16. We eat a lot of the same things around our house! We buy mostly organic and natural, especially since our daughter was diagnosed with migraines (the preservatives are terrible for them). I love LUNA bars too. Had never thought about the ensure drinks (my Granny used to drink them, LOL). Just be careful with some of the flavored sparkling waters...they can have tons of sugar!

  17. I really like this idea!

I'm also planning on going all organic someday when I'm pregnant.

And love the idea of still making yourself special drinks - such a great idea!

  18. Oh you are doing so much better than I did with my pregnancy diet...I mean, I *tried* not to drink soda and eat healthy and all, but if there was something that sounded good (because most stuff didn't!), it was goin' in the belly!!! (c:

  20. My friend you are the healthiest pregnant woman ever! My diet photo would consist of pizza, grilled cheese, krispy kreme, and mcdonalds while preggo! Great tip on the Ensure I will have to remember that next time!

  24. We eat the same stuff! I have had to switch to organic milk instead of regular and Pellegrino instead of Sprite due to my migraines. I drink Horizon, too and I love the creaminess. I drink Pellegrino from a wine glass sometimes, too. And isn't Chobani the best!! I must try the Kind bars... You are doing good!

  32. Prenatal vitamins made me so sick, eventually my doctor just told me to stop taking them and just make sure I was eating well. And you know both my boys are healthy as can be..so it is *totally* negligent if you cant make them work :) It is funny though how pregnancy makes you SO aware of what you are eating isn't it??
