Dr Oz's Three Day Cleanse: My Review

I want to preface this by saying, that I've never done a cleanse before.  I bought the Master Cleanse Book and was too scared to actually go through with it.  I'm not really about starving myself and want to lose weight in a healthy way.  So when I saw Alissa's review on Dr. Oz's 3 Day Cleanse, I was definitely intrigued.  First of all, Dr Oz seems like a pretty reputable source {I mean, hello Oprah!} and second of all, I trust Alissa, since I know she's a "real" person!  ;)  Third of all, this is a cleanse that has  substance to it.  You essentially drink 4 whole shakes which consist of vegetables, fruits, and other fats.  No starving involved.

Aside from all of that, I've been really struggling to lose those last 10 pounds from my pregnancy.  Nothing seems to work.  Just when I think I make progress, I gain 2-3 pounds back.  It's been super frustrating.  So I figured, this would be a good way to rein in my out of control food proportions {breastfeeding was the culprit here}, curb my sweet tooth, and maybe even lose a couple pounds.

Here's an overview of what's involved:

And here's my review:

Day 1

I started the day with the hot tea and lemon...I skipped the sweetener   The breakfast smoothie was yummy!  I loved the combo of raspberries, banana and almond butter.  Speaking of, how have I never had almond butter?!  It's so delicious!  I was off to a good start!

The lunch smoothie is one word: DISGUSTING!  It's not so much the ingredients...I like apples, cucumber and can tolerate kale...it's the texture.  It's really dense and thick and just gross.  It took me 3 hours to choke down the first day.

I got pretty hungry between lunch and dinner, so I made myself half of a breakfast smoothie again.  And then had the dinner smoothie 2 hours later.  The dinner smoothie is not bad...just a little spicy because of the cayenne pepper.

That night I took the epsom salt bath, which was nice, but it's hard to find time to really enjoy it with a small baby around the corner.  I did get to bed by 9:30 which is unheard of!  I was super tired.

Day 2

Still love the tea and breakfast smoothie and actually look forward to it.  I'm not missing caffeine nearly as much as I thought I would.

I reduced the celery to two stalks and used a food processor which helped immensely with the texture.  It's not AS bad, but still my least favorite.

I'm still hungry after work, but decide to just eat the raspberries and banana with a little almond butter instead of making the entire shake.  I was literally licking the almond butter spoon.

Dinner is the same.  I actually had the hardest time with day two.  It was hard knowing what I was going into and knowing that today wasn't the last day.  I end the day with another bath.

Day 3

SO happy it's the last day!  Happily drink my breakfast smoothie and choke down my lunch smoothie.  Had the same snack after work and then my dinner smoothie followed by the bath.  I notice that I'm not as hungry as the first day and even feel less bloated.

Results

I can't say I felt immensely better...more energized and such.  But I did notice my skin seemed a bit clearer, and most importantly, I lost 7 WHOLE POUNDS!  Yes, I was shocked to read the scale on the 4th morning.  It's been two weeks since I did the cleanse and I've kept five pounds off...not bad for three days.  I can already tell that my cravings have been curbed and my proportions are much more in control.

If you're thinking of kick starting a healthy lifestyle, I would recommend this cleanse.  I really feel like you can do anything for 3 days...and it's probably best to start at the beginning of the week.  I even had a similar breakfast shake on the 4th morning, I was that hooked.  Update: I've been having a variety of the shake every morning along with the green tea and lemon.  I really do love it!

I hope this helps!  Let me know if you have any questions.

  2. I can't believe you lost 7 and kept off 5. That's great! I only lost 3 and gained two back. Did you take the probiotics? I skipped them and wonder if that would have made a difference.

  8. Def want to try this. Curious as to how you drank the lunch shake at work? Did you pre- make it before you left?

    1. I would either run home to make it or make it in the morning and then keep it in the fridge at work.

  9. Wow! I have about 7 lbs of pregnancy weight to lose so maybe I'll try it! Though I'm allergic to bananas so I wonder if there's something else I could use instead that has similar qualities? Any ideas?

    1. I'm not sure, but I'm sure there are alternatives! The banana just helps make it more creamy, as far as taste goes.

  10. I recently did this cleans after seeing it on a few blogs, and I am so jealous of your 7 lb. loss!! I did lose 3 but it's back again. I felt like I did everything from the shakes, supplements and baths except on the last day, I ate my food instead of putting it in the blender. I might have to try this again! I agree though that lunch shake is not good, and I cut back on the amount of cayenne in the dinner shake.

    1. Trying to understand why we can't eat rather than drink this lunch one. OMG - it is beyond disgusting. I am trying to choke it down and it is not going well.

  12. 7 pounds is some incentive - even though I think you already look fabulous!

  13. This actually sounds doable! I did a 3 day cleanse a few months ago and it was not very successful. I think I only lost a couple pounds from it. It amazes me what just eating small portions can do. I need to lose 5 more pounds for my september wedding, but eating healthy small portions and working out three times a week has really improved my lifestyle. I think I'll try this cleanse soon!

  14. Way to go!!! While I like the idea of a detox, I fear that I would not have enough energy to keep up with three kiddos;)

  20. Sounds so tempting! Which probiotics did you take? Did the shake taste weird after being in the fridge for a few hours at work?

    1. I found them at my local Raley's and the shake tasted the same, if not better, after being in the fridge for a couple hours! ;)

  22. That is awesome! Glad you had such great results in a 3 day span of time. Also that you have been able to keep the weight you lost off after you started eating other foods again is amazing! I always think you look beautiful in your pictures and I am so proud of you for sharing this on your blog. It is not always easy to be super transparent but it is so refreshing to read. Have a great day!

  23. Thanks for this review. I am going to try once I'm done breast feeding. What kind if blender do you use? And also did you feel like "cleansed" after, like did you feel like it helped get toxins and such out?

  24. I am half way through my Dr Oz cleanse and love it! It hasn't had the effects MOST people fear, which is constantly having to "drop the kids off at the pool." It keeps you well-nourished for sure! I do get hungry more often, but this is training me to eat a little throughout the day. For the supplements, I personally am using the following: (all purchaed from Whole Foods)
Whole Foods Brand Omega 3 capsule
Whole Foods Brand Daily Multivitamin (contains trace soy and wheat ingredients, but it hasn't bothered me)
    Nutrition Now PB8 w/ 14 billion good bacteria (gluten-free)

  26. Hi! I'm on day 3 of the cleanse and was wondering what kind of food you eat after the cleanse is done? Did you just go back to normal eating or eat something specifically? Thanks!!

    1. Congrats!! I eased my way back into eating normally. Nothing crazy, which is why I liked it so much. I made the breakfast smoothies for months after b/c I loved them so much. :)

  27. I only lost 3 pounds on the cleanse but feel healthy and liked it. I'm allergic to nuts and mango so left out the almond butter and mango, wondering if this had an effect on the results?

  28. Is it bad to do the cleanse when you are pregnant?? I didn't think it would be since is allot of fruits and veggies and sounds healthy and I already bought all the stuff for it :/

    1. Hmmm I would ask your doctor. I think the main concern is getting enough calories.
