Travel Schue is back and ready to take on a new city...this time we're traveling to Dallas baby!
I've got quite a treat for you all today...the uber talented and gorgeous Cassie from
Hi Sugarplum is here and will be your official tour guide through this awesome city. Ready to go big or go home? Take it away Cassie!
Hey ya'll! I'm Cassie from
Hi Sugarplum!, and I'm thrilled to be sharing a little bit about Dallas on Schue Love today.
Mr. Sugarplum and I love to travel...in fact, it's the main reason for our DIY mentality in making over our 1980s house...to save the money for trips!
(You can read about some of our adventures here.)
We live in the suburbs, but Big D is right in our backyard. With over a million people, and as a major cosmopolitan metroplex, it's likely every artist, performer, show and movie will make it's way here. The number of venues and restaurants practically out-number the population, so there is no way I could tell you all the great things about Dallas. I'll just touch on a few of our favorite spots.
The Dallas Arts District is the largest arts district in the nation, spanning 68 acres and 19 contiguous blocks. It's fun to get dressed up for the Nutcracker ballet at the Winspear Opera house, or take advantage of Free Saturdays at many of the museums. We usually make a day of it by taking the DART train in to the city.
Dallas has many lakes, parks and trails, but no where is as naturally beautiful as the Arboretum & Botanical Garden. It was voted one of the top places in the world to see Spring flowers, and each year, more than 500,000 blooms are on display. And what kid (of every age!) doesn't love to be up close with sharks? The Aquarium is a great stop, and you can even eat lunch among the Mayan exhibit.
You may think you've attended a state fair, but nothing compares to the month-long extravaganza that is the State Fair of Texas. We go every September and stuff our faces with fried oreos, fried twinkies and fried peanut butter and jelly sandwiches! Don't knock 'em til you've tried them! And I think standing in the same spot they believe Lee Harvey Oswald stood when he shot President Kennedy as he drove up the street is fascinating. The museum re-enacts that fateful day, and you certainly leave with lots of suspicions.
Shopping is a way of life in Dallas, afterall, it is the birthplace of Neiman Marcus. I think almost every designer and chain store has a location here, as well as countless boutiques and specialty shops. If you're looking for everything in one spot, Northpark and Galleria malls will keep you busy for days!
We prefer spots with more character and personality, so Bishop Arts District is one of our favorite neighborhoods. It's lined with creative shops and delicious locally-owned restaurants.
Which leads us to food! Dallas is home to many celebrity chefs, including Tom Colicchio, Stephen Pyles, Tre Wilcox....but lets face it, we're going to eat Mexican food every chance we get! The list of good ones is a mile long, but Mi Cocina is at the top of my list. Just one of their signature Mambo Taxis, and they'll be calling you a cab ride home!
It's true, everything really is bigger in Texas, and there is no shortage of things to see, do, eat and drink! Thanks Natasha for allowing me to show off Big D!
I have to say, I've only been to Texas once {Austin to be specific} and I'm already itching to go back...and you better bet it will be Dallas next time. Hope Cassie is ready for someone to crash on her couch! ;)
Thanks again to Cassie for showing us that bigger is really better in Texas!
In case you've missed the last cities we've visited:
Columbus
Charleston
Chicago
New York
Until next time...
